Uzungöl and Surrounding Nature in Türkiye

Uzungöl is a forest-fringed mountain lake in Trabzon province, where the green highlands of Türkiye's Black Sea region meet mist, timber villages and quiet valleys.

Uzungöl, whose name means "long lake" in Turkish, lies in the Çaykara district of Trabzon province, within the Black Sea region of Türkiye. Sitting at roughly 1,090 metres above sea level and framed by steep, wooded slopes, it is one of the most recognisable natural scenes in the country's northeast, where high mountains, heavy rainfall and dense forest meet in a single landscape.

A Lake Formed by a Landslide

The lake occupies the floor of a narrow valley and is generally described as a landslide-dammed lake: a slope failure in the past blocked the course of a mountain stream, and water gradually gathered behind the natural barrier. Because the valley walls rise sharply from the shoreline, the water appears enclosed, with forest running almost to the edge and reflections of trees and clouds across the surface. Streams still feed the basin, and the cool, oxygen-rich water supports trout and other freshwater life.

Forests, Peaks and the Black Sea Climate

The surrounding slopes belong to the Soğanlı Mountains and the wider eastern Black Sea highlands, a zone of spruce, fir and beech forest that stays green for much of the year. Abundant rainfall, cool summers and snowy winters shape the scenery here. Morning mist often settles over the valley, lifting slowly through the trees, while the higher ridges open onto broad views of layered mountains. Mosses, ferns and wildflowers thrive in the damp shade, and the forest shelters deer, foxes, squirrels and a rich variety of birds, including raptors that circle above the ridgelines.

Highland Villages and Wooden Architecture

Beyond the lake, the district is dotted with yayla settlements — seasonal highland pastures where families have long moved with their livestock in the warmer months. Local building traditions are distinctive: timber houses with wide balconies, and the serender, a raised wooden granary set on posts, used for storing grain and food away from damp ground and animals. Stone-and-wood construction, steep roofs for heavy snow, and small mosques with simple interiors are part of the same rural landscape, giving the area a cultural character as well as a natural one.

Seasons and Wildlife

Each season changes the valley. Spring brings fresh green growth and rushing meltwater, summer fills the meadows with wildflowers and the sound of insects by the water, autumn turns the beech woods to gold and copper, and winter lays a quiet layer of snow over the slopes. Because the climate is wet and temperate, the lake area remains a habitat for a wide range of species all year round, and the surrounding valleys offer gentler walks as well as more demanding routes toward the higher plateaus.

Flavours of the Eastern Black Sea

Food in this part of Türkiye reflects the wet, green landscape. Kuymak, a warm dish of cornmeal cooked with cheese and butter, is a regional staple, alongside karalahana çorbası, a soup made from black cabbage. Anchovies, known here as hamsi, feature in many dishes along the coast, and mısır ekmeği, a cornbread, often accompanies meals. Tea grown on the surrounding hills of Rize province is served everywhere, usually strong and in small curved glasses.

Taken together, Uzungöl and its surroundings show how closely nature, climate and rural culture are linked in the Black Sea region of Türkiye — a place of forests, water, mountain air and long-standing highland traditions.
